1/72 scale. Martin WB-57F. Wood Desktop Model. Masterworks Models. Length: 11.25 inches; Wingspan: 20 inches. The U.S.-built twinjet tactical bomber and reconnaissance aircraft entered service with the U.S. Air Force in 1953. In 1983 the Air Force retired the aircraft, but a few were retained and officially assigned as high-altitude scientific research aircraft to the NASA Johnson Space Center next to Ellington Field in Houston, Texas. In addition to their NASA research, however, the aircraft also engage in testing and communications in the United States and Afghanistan. Equipped with the Battlefield Airborne Communications Node system (BACN - pronounced "bacon") the modified WB-57s - painted in unmarked, anonymous white color schemes - act as universal translators, transmitting data between troops on the ground and aircraft in the sky and facilitating networked information-driven warfare. Featured in this model is one of the WB-57Fs decked out in NASA colors. This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
