Steve Wiper; Warship Pictorial. The second USS New Jersey (BB-62) was launched December 7th 1942 by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, completed fitting out and commissioned May 23rd 1943. On January 7th 1944 she passed through the Panama Canal bound for Funafuti, Ellice Islands. Arrived January 22nd for duty with the Fifth Fleet, three days later rendezvoused with Task Group 58.2 for the assault on the Marshall Islands.

This book describes in detail the history of the USS New Jersey BB-62, "Big J," or "Black Dragon" throughout her career in the US Navy, from construction during the early years of WWII, early wartime (1943-1945) shelling Japanese held islands, screening USN aircraft carrier battle groups, then the Korean War, shelling North Korean positions, Vietnam War, shelling North Vietnam positions, mothball fleet, then re-commissioned again 1983-1991 for service in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Persian Gulf, and eventually as a museum ship in late 2001.
