1/32 scale.  scale. Curtis P-40E Warhawk. Wood Desktop Model. Mastercraft Models. Length: 10.75 inches; Wingspan 12.75 inches. Design work on the P-40 began in 1937, but numerous experimental versions were tested and refined before service deliveries began in September 1940. P-40s first saw wartime service with the British Commonwealth squadrons of the Desert Air Force in August 1941. Unable to outperform the top Japanese and German fighters of the day, the Warhawk’s tough build and good diving performance made it an effective warfighter. In 1941, the American Volunteer Group “The Flying Tigers” began combat operations in China against Japanese forces. In little more than six months, the Tigers shot down 229 Japanese aircraft and destroyed scores more on the ground. The P-40E Warhawk featured in this model, "White 68," was the aircraft flown by American ace Charles "Chuck" Older, during his time as a member of the storied American Volunteer Group - better known as "the Flying Tigers" - that battled the Japanese in China in 1941 and 1942. Older, a member of the 3rd Pursuit Squadron, whose "Hell's Angels" emblem is emblazoned on the model - downed 18 enemy aircraft. He survived the war and returned to civilian life where he distinguished himself in the legal field, serving as judge in the trial of the Charles Manson murders. This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
