1/70 scale. Convair F-106A Delta Dart. Wood Desktop Model. Mastercraft Models. Length: 12 inches; Wingspan: 6.5 inches. The F 106 Delta Dart came as a response to the 1954 interceptor program of the US Air Force. The aircraft was initially an advanced spin-off from the F-102, causing it to be called the F-102B during the early stages. But after a few rounds of modifications (especially with the design), the aircraft warranted a separate design class. It was officially re-designated as the F-106 on June 1956. Aside from changes in the framework, there were also changes in terms of performance and speed such as a lengthened fuselage and a different engine. The F106 aircraft used the Pratt & Whitney J-75-P-17 turbojet of the F-102. The first prototype was first flown on December 1956 but tests until 1957 showed troubling results. None of the intended "improvements" worked out which threatened the cancellation of the program. But with the USAF's insistence, the F-106 was continuously modified. The improved plane, designated as the F-106A, was officially rolled out of the factories and entered military service by October 1959. The second round of changes proved helpful as the aircraft set a world speed record of 1,525.96mph during a flight on December 1959. During its service, the Delta Dart flew for the U.S, Germany, Iceland, as well as South Korea, making it the second highest sequentially numbered P/F- aircraft. This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
