The Consolidated PB2Y Coronado was the result of a late 1930s USN request for a four engined next generation flying boat to follow the PBY Catalinas, then in service. The prototype Coronado first flew in December 1937. 217 Coronados were built, serving during WWII as, patrol bomber, flag officer's transport, material and personnel transport, hospital plane, and even as a hunter and destroyer of Japanese aircraft.
