Of all the bombs that existed during the Second World War, the Little Boy Atomic Bomb may well be the most famous. First used in warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Little Boy was the nuclear weapon that ended World War II. The amount of energy generated by an exploding Little Boy atomic bomb was the equivalent of a 15 kiloton TNT explosiondespite its relatively small size. The ultra-high air pressure that resulted in a very powerful blast consumed half of that energy; when the explosion generated heat, it consumed one third of the rest of the energy, while the remaining energy was consumed in the creation of radiation. Designed by the Consolidated Aircraft Company, the B-24 Liberator airplane served the United States Army Air Corps during the 1930s. Designed to replace the equally impressive Flying Fortress, it was actually named the Liberator by the British as the B-24 proved to be one of the Allied forces mightiest weapons. Its a massive aircraft powered by four large propellers on both wings and modified to include an improved autopilot. Seems simple enough but with added armaments such as 12.7mm heavy machine guns on the nose turret, and with improved bombsight system, it has become a highly efficient warplane. One of the most effective bomber aircraft, the B-24 actually even holds the record as the most produced heavy bomber in aviation history. Its impressive image commanded fear and might during the World War II.

Similar in design to the CH-47 Chinook series of transport helicopters, the CH-46 Sea Knight keeps its engine components mounted on top to provide unobstructed access to the aircraft. While the CH-47 Chinook serves the US Army, the CH-46 Sea Knight is the main transport helicopter of the US Marine Corps. Both aircraft use the patented tandem three-blade rotor design, but the latter is powered by two Lycoming turboshaft engines. This gives it the power to carry external sling loads whenever necessary. In a Marine Medium Helicopter (HMM) squadron, the CH-46 Sea Knight is primarily responsible for transporting combat troops and their supplies during operations. Movement of supplies and equipment is a secondary function. The CH-46 Sea Knight is also utilized for evacuation operations, search and rescue, as well as rearming and refueling.

Scale: 1/70
Length: 12 inches
Wingspan: 6.5 inches

The F 106 Delta Dart came as a response to the 1954 interceptor program of the US Air Force. The aircraft was initially an advanced spin-off from the F-102, causing it to be called the F-102B during the early stages. But after a few rounds of modifications (especially with the design), the aircraft warranted a separate design class. It was officially re-designated as the F-106 on June 1956. Aside from changes in the framework, there were also changes in terms of performance and speed such as a lengthened fuselage and a different engine. The F106 aircraft used the Pratt & Whitney J-75-P-17 turbojet of the F-102. The first prototype was first flown on December 1956 but tests until 1957 showed troubling results. None of the intended improvements worked out which threatened the cancellation of the program. But with the USAFs insistence, the F-106 was continuously modified. The improved plane, designated as the F-106A, was officially rolled out of the factories and entered military service by October 1959. The second round of changes proved helpful as the aircraft set a world speed record of 1,525.96mph during a flight on December 1959. During its service, the Delta Dart flew for the US, Germany, Iceland, as well as South Korea, making it the second highest sequentially numbered P/F- aircraft.

Scale: 1/48

Quite interestingly, the development of the F117 Nighthawk was mostly done in secret - true to its trademark black jet appearance. Design and modifications were considered as a black project by Lockheed during the early stages. But records point out that development began during the mid-1970s when Lockheeds analyst Denys Overholser tried to employ Soviet mathematician Pyotr Ufimtsevs radar theories into a plane design. With better technology, achieving such a feat seemed possible at that time; and so Lockheed began its Hopeless Diamond project in 1975. When the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency learned about the project, it expressed its support and contracted Lockheed to build two prototypes of this stealth fighter under the codename Have Blue. These demo planes first flew on December 1977 and showed that a stealth plane is indeed possible. Hence, the US government increased its funding for the project and initiated the Senior Trend project, which saw the construction of the Lockheed F117A. The first prototype, the YF-117A, was first flown on June 1981 and official production began a year later. And, quite as expected, the aircraft was widely employed thanks to its breakthrough technology.

In August 1952, the Lockheed L-1049 TWA Constellation was delivered to TWA as N6901C and was dubbed Star of the Thames. Throughout the 1950s, the Lockheed airplane had been in a race with Douglas for the airplane that was the fastest, had the longest range, and most economical. Douglas began the race with its DC-4. However, Lockheed had countered with its L1049 which was no doubt a faster plane and even pressurized. When the larger, faster, and pressurized DC-6 model was developed, Lockheed was led to introduce the next thing in airliners, which was the Super Constellation. Bigger by more than 18 feet and powered by Wright R-350 radials, the brand new Super Connie was faster and had a higher flying altitude than the DC-6.

It earned different nicknames like fork-tailed devil by the Germans and two planes, one pilot by the Japanese during the World War II. The Lockheed Lightning P38 was outfitted with twin booms, with its tail horizontally fused at the back. With its three-bladed propellers on either side of the cockpit, the P38 Lockheed was quieter than the other fighter planes. This aircraft saw its first action in service after the Pearl Harbor Attack, but it was also used for reconnaissance missions by the United States Army Air Forces. The P38 Lockheed Lightning was successfully used in the Pacific theater where long hours of high altitude action were needed. It was credited for being able to destroy the most number of Japanese airplanes during WWII.

Development of the Boeing N2S began when General Hap Arnold commissioned Lloyd Stearman and his company to create a primary trainer plane that can be used by all military branches. It is believed that this move came after the US anticipated another world war. Stearman Aircraft Corporation came up with the Model 75 aircraft which was the earliest version of the PT-17. The plane was inexpensive and had a distinguishable look (open cockpit, bi-winged, and covered in fabric). Nonetheless, the Model 75 boasted good maneuverability and durability. Thus, it was immediately employed by the US Navy and the US Army Air Corps. The aircraft was re-designated as the Kaydet when Boeing Aircraft bought Stearman but it was more commonly known as the Stearman. At some point, the US Navy began calling the plane as the Yellow Peril. The name came after, well, the bright yellow scheme and the planes tendency to ground loop after landing.

U-2 Long Nose - MFNC09127 - Mastercraft Models U-2 Long Nose - MFNC09127 - Mastercraft Models

Scale: 1/103
Length: 7.3 inches
Wingspan: 12 inches

The Lockheed U-2 Long Nose is a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft that can fly up to 70,000 feet. Operating both day and night, the Long Nose had been a prominent aircraft during and after the Cold War. Also called the Dragon Lady, the U-2 aircraft sports a sleek and lightweight airframe that affords the plane glider-like characteristics. However, its lack of power-assisted controls combined with higher air density makes this plane difficult to fly especially at low altitudes. Moreover, the Long Nose is also very sensitive to crosswinds, making the aircraft difficult to land. Despite its drawbacks, the U-2 Dragon Lady was very effective in collecting intelligence data. The aircraft has various sensors in its nose, wing pods, and Q-bay that allow it to collect signals, imagery, and other intelligence data all at once. Previously flown by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Long Nose nearly made it to the chopping board in 2013 when it was scheduled to be replaced by unmanned Global Hawk drones. However, delays in production extended the U-2s service in the military.

Designed after the Messerschmitt P. 1101 airplane, the Bell X-5 was the first aircraft in the world to have the capability of varying the sweepback of its wings in flight. This was the major difference of the Bell X-5 from the Messerschmitt P. 1101, the latter could only vary its sweep while on the ground. It was a proof of concept, the main reason for designing and developing the Bell X-5 was to prove that a higher maximum speed could be achieved by increasing the sweepback of an airplane's wings after takeoff. This while retaining low takeoff and landing speed and higher rate of climb with the wings swept forward. It was the first aircraft to utilize in-flight variable geometry wings. The program that produced the X-5 was also being considered for an American/NATO low-cost tactical fighter initiative.
