Overview

1/72 Scale Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4. Airfix. This iconic German Luftwaffe fighter of World War II, the "Emil' variant of the Bf 109 was armed with cowl mounted MG 17s and MG FF/M wing cannon. This kit features crisp engraved panel lines, detailed cockpit, optional seated pilot figure, integral upper engine detail with removable upper cowling panel, optional position trailing edge flaps, separately molded rudder, optional position undercarriage and segmented optional position canopy. Included are decals and color painting guide for a single German aircraft, Werknummer 1480: "Black < +_" of I/JG3, pilot Oberleutnant Franz von Werra, Samer, France, August 1940. Shot down over Kent, England, on 5 September 1940, von Werra was captured and shipped to Canada. Under transport aboard a prison train near Montreal on 21 January 1941, he lept out of a train window, crossed the frozen St. Lawrence River into the still neutral USA, and later, after an epic journey through Mexico, Latin America, Spain, and Italy arrived back in Germany to be hailed as a hero. Ironically he perished in a non-combat training flight on 25 October 1941. His epic escape, the only one by a Luftwaffe POW from Canada, was the subject of a 1957 feature filme "The One THat Got Away." Kit includes instrument markings and stencil data.
